Dal boli|Paruppu Boli|Puran Poli

I used to love this sweet stuffed flat bread tasted it in college when my friends used to bring it.I actually have never tasted it till then I must confess. My daughter loves it now.We buy it for her from the local sweet vendor and have been wanting to try it for a long time, but somehow i felt it was too complex, until I tried it.Loved to make it and it tasted really good.I also gave it a make-over after something I saw on tv.

Nendran pazham pradhaman/payasam/Ripe plantain payasam

I love Onam because it reminds me a lot of my childhood days when my then lovely neighbours used to pass on lovely food.Back then it was really exciting to get food from friends' or even eat from out.Small kiddy wishes we used to have.

Wishing all my friends from Gods own country(Kerala) a prosperous Onam.

No cook - Oil/dairy free Peanut Jaggery ladoos

The summer vacation is officially yet to begin but our minds are already in holiday mode, I'm making too many snacks now but no time to share them here. The toddler is always on the move and I extra arms and legs(even eyes) to watch over him. This recipe was shared to me by friend Vidya she's my guru to make indian sweets which I never wanted to venture because of the complex issues in them. But once I tried them home made is the best! And the best part - its got no cooking at all!!

This time i have been paired with Nirmala, i have chosen her sweet poha - its such a yummy and tasty and yes one quick snack...did i forget to mention healthy too!I tried this with red poha/aval the first time and it definitely makes a huge difference to the taste. This dish though i have used white aval/poha its tasty nonetheless.

Mustard seeds 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves 1 sprig
Baby onions 5 6 nos chopped finely
Urad dal 1 tsp
Cumin seeds 1 tsp

  • Heat oil in a pan, add mustard seeds, curry leaves, baby onions, urad dal and cumin seeds allow to fry.
  • Next add the softened poha and mix well with salt to taste.
  • Add the jaggery scrappings and mix well until the jaggery melts or if you like it as chunks just heat it for 2 minutes and turn it off.

Sweetness in a Cup : B & W Wednesday

Jaggery/Gud is a traditional, wholesome form of sugar. It is widely used in many traditional sweet and savory dishes in India and Srilanka.I loved this picture the beautiful curls of jaggery so sweet and versatile!

Sweetness in a cup
I used this jaggery to make candied nuts...giving the already beautiful nuts a nice golden glaze!
Read more about jaggery here
We use them in payasams, candies and most recently I have started taking a small piece of jaggery as its soothes the sore throat!

Sending this to BWW @ the well-seasoned cook

Candied Nuts

The festival of lights is just around the corner,as households prepare for the special days with all the pomp and splendor and the most important part of our festivals---food (of course).Households prepare fresh sweets and snacks for festivities and thats a celebration in itself and ofcourse giving away sweets to friends and relatives is always a pleasure!

I had seen Anjum Anand make these candied nuts a long time ago on tv.I thought its such a cute and quick- easy -to- make gift for friends during Diwali.

To make these you need

Jaggery 1 cup(or less)
Mixed nuts 1 cup
Butter/ghee to grease a sheet

  • Grease a cookie sheet or plate with ghee or butter and set aside.
  • Put the jaggery in about a quarter cup of water and heat it on a low flame.Continue stirring this until the jaggery has melted into a nice frothy syrup.

  • Throw the nuts in and let it coat the syrup nicely. Now put the coated nuts on the greased plate and let it dry.
  • Once they are dry you can wrap it up into small gift packs for your friends.

  • Chop them into pieces and serve them as a topping for your desserts!

Happy Diwali!

Sending this to Indus ladies for their Diwali sweets event!

and to A girl's diary
